Turn of Phrase: Small choices can be powerful
In the most unlikely of places, a burlesque show at GenCon, a single beautiful choice of translation has haunted me. I witnessed thirty years of evolution of a language in just a few short words while rocking out to Metallica.
A night out
A little while ago, I had the opportunity to be a vendor at GenCon 2022 with our tabletop gaming company Limitless Adventures. More than a handful of years prior to the pandemic, we used to attend the con, play a lot of games, attend a lot of events, and spend a lot of money. As a vendor, the con is a little more direct: You spend very long days in a booth, and by the time you finish eating dinner, your choice is either the sweet embrace of sleep, or hit a late-night event. This year, a good friend messaged and invited me to a d20 Burlesque show. It was fun, I highly recommend it if you get the chance. I particularly enjoyed the Klingon striptease, where the dancer removed just about as many weapons, knives, and swords as she did clothes.
ASL Interpreters!
I was delighted to see that the show had two American Sign Language interpreters as well. I did notice a couple attendees who appeared to sign who were escorted to the front, so I don’t know if this was something set up for their benefit for accommodations, or just a happy coincidence.
